508 Compliance

  Visual Clarity Suite and Section 508

 
  Visual Analytics strives to be in compliance with section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (29 U.S.C. 794d). Section 508 requires that when Federal agencies develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology, Federal employees with disabilities have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to the access and use by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. Section 508 also requires that individuals with disabilities, who are members of the public seeking information or services from a Federal agency, have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to that provided to the public who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency.

The following table provides an overview of the Visual Clarity Suite of products consisting of VisuaLinks® and Digital Information Gateway (DIG®).

1194.21 Software applications and operating systems

(a) When software is designed to run on a system that has a keyboard, product functions shall be executable from a keyboard where the function itself or the result of performing a function can be discerned textually. All menu commands can be accessed through the keyboard using the ALT, TAB, and arrow keys. However, all graphical interactions require use of the mouse.

(b) Applications shall not disrupt or disable activated features of other products that are identified as accessibility features, where those features are developed and documented according to industry standards. Applications also shall not disrupt or disable activated features of any operating system that are identified as accessibility features where the application programming interface for those accessibility features has been documented by the manufacturer of the operating system and is available to the product developer. VisuaLinks is written entirely in Java, is installed as a self-contained environment, and does not require any changes to the operating system. Additionally, VisuaLinks will not interrupt, disrupt, or disable features of any other products or operation systems. DIG is a self contained executable that requires no changes to the operating system after installation. Additionally, DIG will not interrupt, disrupt, or disable features of any other products or operation systems.
(c) A well-defined on-screen indication of the current focus shall be provided that moves among interactive interface elements as the input focus changes. The focus shall be programmatically exposed so that assistive technology can track focus and focus changes. VisuaLinks provides on-screen indication of the current focus (box highlighting, reverse bold, etc) that moves among interactive interface elements as the input focus changes.Programmatic focus complies with all Java interface graphical-widget standards. DIG provides on-screen indication of the current focus in the normal Windows® style (highlighted buttons, dots around boxes, etc).

** Footnote 1 - Keyboard Function Description

  • Keyboard shortcuts - All menus have an associated keyboard shortcut. To access any menu, press Alt and the underlined letter in the menu name as it appears on the interface. For example to access the File menu in the VisuaLinks application, press Alt + f.

    Once the menu has opened, you can access a menu item by pressing the underlined letter in the menu item name, or you can use the arrow keys to navigate the menu list. For menu items with an associated keyboard shortcut, the shortcut is listed on the menu to the right of the item.

  • Directional arrows - Use the directional arrows on the keyboard to navigate through menu items or to scroll vertically and horizontally. You can also use the directional arrows to navigate through multiple options. For example, if you have a series of radio buttons, you can use the arrow keys to navigate the possible selections.

  • Tab key sequence - To navigate through a dialog box, press the Tab key. Selected items appear with a dotted border. You can also press Shift + Tab to go back to a previous selection within the dialog box.

  • Spacebar - Press the Spacebar to toggle check boxes on and off or to select buttons in a dialog box.

  • Esc - Press the Esc key to close a dialog box without implementing any new settings.

  • Enter - Press the Enter key to select the highlighted item or to close a dialog box with the new settings. You can also press the Enter key to close all About boxes.

  • Balloon Help - Balloon help appears for all functional icons.
